IT took years, in fact a decade and a half, but courtesy of Debreceni VSC Peter and Frances are getting ready to enjoy some Champions' League football matches - without having to travel more than 10 minutes on the Budapest metro.

Yes, folks. The big time is coming to us - Liverpool, Lyon and Fiorentina. All it took was three hours of queuing with other footy fans a week ago.

Its round ball heaven for footy tragics like the Scotts.

BUDAFOK WINE FESTIVAL

ITS grape harvest time in Central Europe, time to taste the new wine, the sweet muscatel, which is exactly what we did at the Budafok Wine Festival on the southern edge of Budapest last Saturday.

But, even better than the wine was the rich, smoky taste of the calf roasted on a spit.

WE would be happy to have a "followers" gadget present in our family blog. However, as in almost every family, we also have someone in ours who walks the "dark side", my brother Steven Scott in Australia, who insists on trying to pollute the contents.

In the absence of effective treatment for whatever he suffers from, the gadget has been removed from the blog. Any untoward, foul, or otherwise offensive comments are removed from the blog, anyway. Those which are within the boundaries of civilized and sane behavior - which means everyone else - are welcome.

P.S. As for any "Anonymous" comments arriving on our doorstep, attesting to my brother's allegedly impeccable reputation - if identified by name and address, I will be pleased to provide copies of Steven's rants aimed at my family. If not identified, don't bother. Save yourself the time, "Anonymous", just tell Steven how great he is. Won't take you long to find him, will it? Keep annoying us and the rants may start appearing in the blog. I have stacks of them on file, going back to 2005. Have a nice day :)

AAAAAARGH! PIRANHAS IN THE BLUE DANUBE!!!!

GUESS what was found happily swimming around in the Danube a few days ago? A bloody piranha, that's what. Complete with mean look and a sharp set of teeth - all the better to nibble you with.

After a few days in captivity it passed away to the great river in the sky, or wherever. In the meantime, the sensible part of the populace is wondering who is the idiot, who got sick of his exotic "pet" and decided, instead of turning it into fish fingers, the best idea would be to dump it into Europe's largest river?

HEAVEN knows, there is plenty that could be better in this small country, my our new/old home, Hungary.

Therefore, it is all the more important to speak up when there is something good to say.

Last year this nation of just ten million people, published no less than 15,255 new titles. A total of 44 and a half million books were purchased by the citizenry during the same 12 months, which is an average of around 4.5 books per citizen, including new born babies and toddlers.

It is notable, that almost 13 percent of sales were made up of children's books. Once we ponder that figure, we get to understand the voracious appetite for reading among Magyars. Its a pastime, a passion from the cradle to the grave - the inroads made by television and other medias nothwithstanding.

A record any country, any nation would be proud of.

FOR those of us, those of YOU, who appreciate cinema as more than just a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours in the dark, one of the absolute very best of recent times is now running in Budapest.

Rush to see it, when it appears in your neck of the woods. The film is I've Loved You For So Long, or in its original French version, Il y a longtemps que je t'aime.

Kristin Scott-Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein are quite simply superb, as is everyone else in a film of drama, emotion, sibling love and the portrayal of the resilience of human beings in the face of immense challenges. A stunning film.

BIRTHDAYS galore are on the agenda. It was Den's turn in late April, Fran's happens later this month and mine rounds it all off just over a week before THE wedding in early June.

In the meantime, Maggie and Den were in springtime Budapest just a day before her 25th on May 4.

Had a great Korean meal at Mennyei Ízek (Heavenly Flavors) in Old Buda on Friday, then it was time for a lovely, marzipany cake on Sunday, before the kids and Fran set off for the Czech Republic.

Fran has now returned after a week's stay, having managed to find a train that actually came through - all the way from Hamburg - on the day of a major train strike!

MEANTIME, BACK IN THE COUNTRYSIDE . . .

What's more, Sunday they go home to Sudislav and take Fran with them for a week's visit to the Czech lands.

IT WAS a big one, this time around. Fran and I celebrated our 36th - that's right, 36th!!!! - anniversary, with a slap up meal at the Corinthia Grand Royal Hotel's fabulous Rickshaw Restaurant on Budapest's main drag, the Körút.

To make the experience even sweeter - HUF15.000 (around AUD100) was on the house, after my quick and winning reaction to a quiz in the hotel's newsletter.

IT already seems a lifetime since last January 19, when Den and Maggie - finally! - arrived from Australia. They parted in Frankfurt, Den going straight on to Sudislav, while Maggie flew to Bratislava for a very special reunion with us.

Any time your child arrives, following a lengthy separation, it is a special occasion. However, what made this SUPER SPECIAL was the fact, that this time she wasn't coming for a visit, Fran and I did not have to start counting down the days - as we have for the past five long years - before she heads back to Sydney University again.

This time Maggie and Den came to stay!!!

This, without the slightest shadow of a doubt, was the greatest moment of our lives since settling in Europe five and a half years ago.

From now on, even when we are not together, we know that we are never far apart. Budapest to Sudislav is just a reasonable train ride, or drive apart. Even when the kids go to settle in London towards the end of summer - we know it won't take more than a 2 hour flight - tops! - and a €60 return ticket to go and spend time with them, or for them to come and spend time with us.

At those prices, we may even be able to scrape together the cost of tickets to a Chelsea game, or two, or three!

Life IS good!

MEET our very own fairytale story, a rags to riches tale par excellence.

Her name is Tiffani Williams, born in Tobago, who just a few short years ago wasn't even aware of the opportunities European pro basketball offers to those tough enough, dedicated enough and hungry for success.

Tiff is now climbing steadily up the ladder of success, this season finally hitting the ranks of the highly paid elite of European basketball. Of course, loads of natural talent help, but being 201cm tall is no hindrance, either.

Fran and I are proud of having Tiff as a client, proud of having helped to set her on the road to success and financial security for life after basketball. However, we are proudest of the fact, that we also gained a friend we love. With sufficient level of motivation, an attitude of total professionalism and a burning hunger to succeed, nothing can stop Tiffani from reaching the very highest levels of sporting success and stardom over the next few years.

As the old cliché goes, the ball is in her court.

WELL, friends. If you all thought we have disappeared without a trace, you may well have been justified in your thinking.

However, reality often confounds perception. It is simply, that the summer months are when Frances and I earn our living for almost the whole 12 months of the year. This is when we talk, we negotiate, we send out DVDs, information, statistics, when we spend immense amounts of time on the phone talking to clubs all over Europe and our players all over the world.

Naturally, such an investment of time and effort means temporary cutbacks in other areas - such as our beloved blog.

Now is the time we will attempt to make up for it. Bear with us and come back to us - please.

MIDSUMMER MAGIC

SUMMERTIME in Budapest and there are unusual sights to see.

Just a couple of blocks from our place, around the corner from our parking station, next door from our local synagogue and around 100 meters from the main boulevard - there is a sure sign that summer has arrived. No, its not the fact that the temperature hit 34 Celsius today. It is when our local Queen of Sunworshippers is out there again, on the ledge above the local hairdresser's shop entrance.

Its a ritual, like Groundhog Day in rural America. Here we await the little old lady of Hegedüs Gyula Street, looking forward to the moment when she discards all superfluous clothing and when the sun is on her apartment, in the afternoon, she climbs out the big window and starts her sunbaking.

Yippee, its summer again!

OK, OK - it really was mainly business.

But, the truth is, it is always a pleasure to visit that most civilized of Serbian cities - Újvidék to Hungarians, Novi Sad to the rest of humanity.

It was no different yesterday. We went, we met with the folks we were meant to meet with, spent a bit of time with old friends from Sydney, Gordana and Frank Arok (enjoying the ambiance with Frances above), who have moved back to Novi Sad after their many years in Australia. And, we enjoyed once again the sights and sounds of this lovely city.

A CONCERT FOR THE TIMES - IN VIENNA

NOW, a special musical treat.

We reward all of you who visit our blog with the fabulous sound of Lilljana Buttler and the Mostar Sevdah Revival in concert. We were fortunate to be part of the sellout audience in Vienna, when this group of marvellous musicians - made up of Serbs, Croats and Bosnians - brought all the emotion of their homeland to the stage. And, they did it with the help of those in attendance on an emotion filled night which will be impossible to forget.

Sit back, switch off everything else and enjoy this musical delight. For most of you probably the first, but also the last time to enjoy the legendary Lilljana live on stage. At the age of 80, she was taking her final curtain call, as part of a sellout tour of Europe.

France and I had the pleasure of visiting last autumn.
It was a superb sight to see the old fortress from our hotel window, but a visit to the Festival of New Wine in the town center was even better.

IRON CURTAIN MEMORIES

IT was a dream come true, when just a few days before my birthday, Fran and I returned to the section of the Austro-Hungarian border, where a piece of the old Iron Curtain still stands.

Not much more than a souvenir of a bygone era, at a crossing which isn't even attended by border guards anymore. Just outside Sopron, at the site of the Pan-European Picnic of 1989, when thousands of East Germans busted through the barriers, abandoning hundreds of old Trabant cars on the Hungarian side of the border.

I have long planned to commemorate our family's past as refugees, who also left Hungary not very far from this spot and on this day we did. Find out how, by running the video clip.

BUDAPEST is the city of hot water springs and none more famous than the venerable Széchenyi Baths in Városliget (the City Park).

More famous even than the baths themselves are its waterborne chess fanatics, who are ready to take on all comers day and night, summer, winter autumn and spring.

They have featured in every imaginable tourist guide ever written about Budapest, were even present in the famous Hungarian tourist ads of a few years ago on CNN. Therefore it was high time, they also took pride of place in our blog.

Here they are, for all of you to enjoy, Budapest's aquatic chess wizards in action on a beautiful sunny winter's day in February (water temperature - 38 Celsius).

AS they say in the real estate business - location, location, location!

And in this respect, the city of Budapest is truly blessed. On the two banks of the Danube, soon after the great river takes a 90 degree turn to head south, towards the Balkans, Hungary's capital is a wondrous sight, especially on warm summer nights, with its multitude of historical edifices floodlit for all to enjoy.

A sight not to be missed for all of you, if ever you decide to wander around historic, beautiful Central Europe.

TIME TO SAY - ENOUGH!

DEMOCRACY means tolerance of diverse and often not very palatable views.

However, there comes a point, when people, the decent majority say - "ENOUGH!"

That was the situation when thousands poured into the streets of Budapest's XIIIth district on an April day. They were responding to a small bloc of extreme rightwingers, who have got the idea, they have freedom of the streets of this beautiful city.

That misconception was corrected in a resounding and, frankly, very satisfying manner when the decent folk of this city made their views known in a very public manner. And it wasn't confined to the ordinary people. Hungary's Prime Minister was on hand and thunderous ovation greeted the speech of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who announced - "We will stand up to them!"

There we all were, Jews and non-Jews, Skinheads Against Nazis, Gypsies, men, women, young and old, black and white, sweeping the rubbish from our streets.

Young men and women holding up their names and phone numbers, to show the bastards that decent people are not afraid.

It was a good day to be alive, a good day to be in Budapest, a good day for decent folks.

And, a very bad one, indeed, for the lunatic thuggish fringe. They have remained conspicuously absent from the streets of the city ever since.

BACK AGAIN - MTK ARE CHAMPIONS!!!

I WAS looking for an appropriate moment to restart our blog - what better than to celebrate MTK winning the Hungarian League?

It was a great day, the 120 year tradition goes on. There were cheers, there were tears and how right was the young guy who announced through his loudspeaker at the kickoff - "Voltunk, vagyunk, leszünk!" Or, we were, we are, we will be!

MTK is and long has been the pride and joy of Hungarian Jews and so it remains. Being there when the Blues won the league again, after an interval of five years, was and will remain a highlight - and a big one at that - of our almost half a decade of living in Hungary. May there be many more such moments, such days, such nights - which ended around 2am at the venerable old MTK Stadium, where fans and players and officials celebrated after the 250km trip home from Sopron.

WE'RE BACK!!!!!!

Sorry guys, we were busy. Mainly work, but also a few viruses which we managed to pick up from our visiting Serbian partner, Nebojsa.

We will try to do better in future, I promise.

Another reason for the unusual slackness? Getting the new computer up and running. Sounds easy, but easy it ain't.

Ahhhh, but the rewards. Like in the field of championship standard couch potatoing (hope I spelt that correctly). Take a peek at our illustration. In the back ground our HD Ready wide screen TV - going to full HD within 24 hours of writing this - with ManU in Champions' League action. And, on my computer screen - Chelsea live in the CL, and Maccabi Tel Aviv battling Barcelona in basketball's Euroleague.

Heaven on a stick.

I have even managed, finally, to see some of our A League teams from Down Under, playing in the Asian Champions League (judgement reserved for the moment).

GASTRONOMY FOR ROMANTICS

UNLIKE in Saudi Arabia, Valentine's Day is an accepted part of life in Budapest. No problems with red roses and the like and, thankfully, no religious police to hassle romantically inclined natives.

So, with Maggie and Den away in his home village in Bohemia, I grabbed Fran, she got herself dressed up in her fur coat, we got on the #6 tram along the main boulevard and got ourselves along to the Carinthia Grand Royal, a spectacular hostelry with very nice restaurants. Our choice - the Rickshaw and its special menu for the day.

Lovely food, lovely setting, very nice service, good company, champagne, long stemmed red rose, the works! Hope to have many more like this in the future.

A LITTLE GEM IN VIENNA

IT took us only four and a half years, but as the old cliche goes - its better late than never. Not only is it better, its terrific - Vienna's English Theater, which puts on five or six week runs of seven productions each season.

Most come from the States, or Britain. They are all fully professional troupes, prices are very reasonable (less than 20 Euros a ticket) and the theater is cosy and gorgeous, located in one of Vienna's beautiful old stately homes. And its just a couple of hours' drive from home on the motorway.

A marvellous discovery and the Scotts are now addicted. Saw a fantastic stand up comedy ensemble from Chicago first up, followed by the London West End production of Michael Frayn's (he of Noises Off fame) Donkey's Years, your typical English farce. Heavier stuff is in the offing next month and after.

TIME TRAVEL IN HUNGARY

REMEMBER the Iron Curtain? Well, its gone. As of midnight last December 20, its gone completely. That was the time when Hungary and several other countries joined the Schengen Zone within the European Community and the era of completely open borders dawned in Central/Eastern Europe.

Last Friday we relived a bit of family history, retracing the Szasz (now Scott) family's footsteps on a day in 1956, more precisely on November 23, when Mum, Dad and I crossed into Austria as refugees. Now that Schengen is with us, it doesn't just mean passage in and out of Hungary whenever I feel like it - that has been the norm even if you only have a Hungarian passport, for some two decades now. It doesn't just mean that passport control at the main border crossings has ceased since last December. It now also means that one can walk across fields, farmland, over creekbeds into, say, Austria whenever and wherever the fancy strikes us. If only my Mum and Dad had lived to see this . . .

So, last Friday Fran, Maggie, Den and I relived my adventure of more than 50 years ago. Except, of course, we did it in broad daylight, there were no Russian patrols to hide from by diving into roadside ditches, no searchlights cutting through the night, not even the sound of distant shooting. None of that, thank God. Just bright sunshine on a cool, crisp winter's day and the challenge of piecing together memories of half a century ago. Finding the little road with the ditches, tracking down the tiny brook which straddles the border, walking across long forgotten fields towards the village of Deutschkreutz, where we slept in a haystack that first night, so long ago . . .

That is what we did and we found it all. And the border which was a lifethreatening presence in 1956 is now no more than a sign for us to pose in front of, some forgotten pylons in the undergrowth, which in another era used to support high voltage barbed wire, an almost hidden and mostly forgotten marker from 1922, when the Austro-Hungarian border was last redrawn and an abandoned Austrian guardhouse. Mementos of one of the most exciting and probably THE most emotional days since we moved to Budapest almost four and a half years ago (can you believe it has been that long already?).

Like I said before - who would have, who COULD have believed this possible?

THE QUEST NEVER ENDS

PERFECTION is what we seek in life and it is no different when we are involved in the neverending quest for the best coffee house and cake shop in Budapest.

Our latest subject for in-depth research was the Muvesz (Artist) Cafe on the main crosstown drag, Andrassy ut. Very nice, very, VERY atmospheric, great coffee, but while nice, the cakes were not outstanding.

That was the unanimous opinion from the whole family, which, as you can see in the pic, included my sister Andrea and her husband Toni. Also expert researchers!

The quest continues . . .

ALL TOGETHER

ITS very nice and homely having the kids around.

Maggie is busy preparing for her last year at Sydney Uni and is putting a major effort into doing well in her least favorite subject, Anatomy. And, Den is around to assist in every way, most specifically by colorcoding hundreds of illustrations, which makes it easier for the child bride to do her work.

Afterwards? Its a well earned and much deserved snooze on the loungeroom sofa for both scholars.

TAKING ADVANTAGE

MIGHT as well take advantage of opportunities which present themselves, I say.

While Central and Eastern Europe is, alas, rapidly catching up to the West in the cost of living indexes, there are still bargains to be found. Where? Some everyday things, such as -

* Movie and theater tickets. How about first release movies at the equivalent of 6 Aussie bucks a pop? Or, superb productions of Broadway musicals at around 20 bucks a ticket? Perhaps, a night at the beautiful Budapest Opera House, enjoying a fabulous staging of one of your favorites for around 30 (and that is a good seat)?

* Restaurant meals. Great food at budget prices, mainly because the staff salaries are still at unbelievably low levels. One can have a meal in one of the five star hotels, or at a restaurant like Gundel and pay through the nose, just as if you were in London, or New York. However, a superb meal can be had in numerous wonderful restaurants for around 10 or 15 Euros a head, drinks and all the frills included.

* Services are cheap (see above, regarding salary levels). House calls by appliance repairmen and the like run to around 15 or 20 Euros.

* THE BIGGEST BARGAIN OF THEM ALL - DENTISTS! Hungarian dentists have been featured on CNN, BBC World and most major newspapers of the western world. They are superbly trained, well equipped and an absolute bargain.

Take Fran, for instance. A couple of weeks ago she had a toothache, which turned out to be dreaded root canal syndrome. Full treatment by a top dentist over three sessions - guess how much? Less than 100 Euros (around 160 Aussie bucks?). She needed a full X ray. Guess how much? 2500 Forints, exactly 10 Euros.

Can't beat that, can you? How much would it have cost us in Sydney?

So, if you plan to tour this part of the world, get your teeth fixed as part of your holiday treat. You will save a mint! Which is why, even as I write this, Maggie is having her annual checkup a few streets from our home, prior to returning to Sydney at the end of this month.

One last item to compare - medical insurance. Costs us just a smidgin over 100 Euros, or around 160 Aussie Dollars a head per month. OK, but that doesn't sound really cheap, does it? However, consider the following - unlimited visits to GPs and specialists, total and unlimited private hospital single room access, all pathology services and anything else you can think of. All of it totally cost free (after the monthly fee).

Why can't we have that back in Australia?

IT was in October 1972, in Montreal, Canada, that I first laid eyes on a snowmobile, a Skidoo. Alas it was at a sporting goods fair and could not hop on and ride it.

Been waiting ever since, but the wait is over. At Madesimo snowmobiles were available for tours of the high country and we took full advantage of the opportunity. More than once.

Nothing like it. Nothing even resembles the fun of roaring across a sparkling white Alpine countryside, up hills, across frozen lakes. NOTHING!!!

A BIT OF HIGH COUNTRY R & R

EVERYONE must have a break now and again and we chose tiny Madesimo in the Italian Alps for a wonderful week's relaxation at the end of January.

That's Fran and I relaxing at 3000 meters, a place where the ski season ends in June! It was all sunshine, warmth and sparkling snow. Skiing? Great. Did we try it? Not at this level, where the runs - on and off piste - looked suicidal. Fran sat it out altogether, Maggie and I did well on the least demanding of the blue runs. Maggie and I did get brave near the end of our stay and went up the mountain to try out a longer blue run. It was NOT a good idea. Scary slopes which, well before the end of the run, turned into a vicious red one.

To save life and limb, we walked to the end.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED AT THE BASKETBALL?

INTO the third year of a "whirlwind" romance, Den has finally got up the courage to pop the question to our Maggie.

Mind you, he did wait until she was in his home village of Sudislav, up in the hills and backwoods of the Czech Republic, on a cold and windy winter night of inclement weather, Maggie dressed in her pyjamas and there was no escape.

So, Maggie said "YES!" and Fran and I found out that our little girl is now an engaged woman when our phone started making a noise in the fourth minute of the third quarter of the Sopron (Hungary) v Lille (France) Euroleague basketball match. It is fair to say, this was the most memorable basketball match Fran and I have ever been to.

So, what now? Well, the happy couple have informed us of the following:

1. Maggie goes home and does her final year of studies at Sydney University, where she will graduate with the same brilliant results she has been maintaining until now (this saved an argument with her strict and merciless Mum and Dad!). In 2007 - five Distinctions and one Credit!

2. Then there will be a gathering of the Scott "clans" in Sydney, March 2009, for her graduation ceremony, where, of course, we will have to choose carefully what we will wear, because Fran and I and Den will all simply be bursting with pride and we don't want to make a mess of Sydney Uni, do we now?

3. Maggie plans to enter her profession's workforce in Britain, with Den, who has already spent considerable time working in London, also looking for livelihood over there. So, the search and planning will begin. Fran and I approve, not least because while Australia is tens of thousands of kilometers away from us, Britain is a mere 100 minutes from Budapest as the birds fly. And, airline tickets are cheaper, as well. (It will probably be no more than lucky coincidence that our likely frequent visits to England will coincide with Chelsea's Premier League matches. Pure luck, mere coincidence, I say.)

4. All going according to plan it will be a beautiful country wedding in Sudislav nad Orlici, Czech Republic, in the summer of 2009.

WELCOME TO THE SCOTT FAMILY BLOG!

Well, it had to happen sometime.

From today we will try to keep you up to date with what is happening to us at this end of the world, far from our friends and families in Australia, North America and those of you nearer to us in Europe and Israel.

WHY are we doing this? Good question. One answer is practical - it is easier than sending separate emails to everyone. The other answer is emotional - we hope that all of you, our friends and family members, will reciprocate in kind and keep us up to date about your lives. Help us keep the bonds of friendship, regardless of the distances between some of us.

So, here goes! Hope you enjoy reading about our goings on as much as we - hope to - enjoy sharing it with all of you. We may be far, far away from most of you, but you are never far in our thoughts!
